CSIS - Celebrating 25 Years of Service

July 16, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).

Since its debut in 1984, the Service has faced many challenges: the Air India tragedy, occurring less than a year and a half after the Service was formed; the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War; and the dangerous environment marked by the 9-11 attacks and more recent terrorism activity.

While still relatively young compared to many similar global agencies, CSIS has nonetheless evolved from a fledgling organization into a solid, professional intelligence service that is respected and relied upon both domestically and internationally.

Much of what the Service has accomplished for Canadians over the past quarter century of global change is, because of the nature of its work, somewhat opaque to the average citizen. Our employees, however, are extremely committed to their job – rather, their mission – of protecting the security of Canadians and Canadian institutions.

We would like to thank Canadians and our many partners and allies in Canada and around the world for their support over the past 25 years. We look forward to the next stage in our evolution, and are more committed than ever to continue to adapt, innovate and reflect the values of our country.
